What Is Botox™?
Botulinum Toxin (Botox™) is a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is safe to use and is an effective treatment in cosmetic clinics but also for several medical conditions including migraine and excessive sweating.
How Does Botox™ Work?
The toxin blocks the transmission of chemical messages from the nerve to the muscle so that the muscle stays in a resting state.
There may only be a partial reduction in movement allowing some remaining movement, or a full block which allows very little remaining movement in the area. This depends on the amount administered and the location of the product placement. Treatment is always tailored to the induvial requirements.
The expected outcomes and whether they can be achieved will be discussed the consultation process.
What Is The Aim Of Botox™ Treatment?
The aim of this treatment is to significantly reduce movement of the muscles causing expressive lines, also known as “dynamic lines’. The main areas of focus are frown lines, crows feet and worry lines across the forehead.
Successful treatment may not cause the expression lines themselves to disappear completely. It may also not completely “freeze” the expression, particularly if extreme efforts are exerted to make an expression.
Botulinum toxin will not completely remove lines present without expression, also known as “static lines”, but it may help to soften these lines. This will be discussed in the initial consultation process.
How Long Will Botox™ Last?
Results tend to last 3-4 months. Movement will begin recovering from 8 weeks. Treatments at intervals of less than 3 months is not recommended.
Repeating treatment when movement recovers will deliver optimum results over time.
Depending on the quality of your skin and your response to treatments, then the frequency at which you require treatments may be reduced.
If you chose not to maintain the results of your treatments and have no further treatments then your muscles and skin will return to their pre-treatment state.
Does Botox™ Hurt?
This treatment is generally not considered by most to be painful and can be well tolerated without the need for any anaesthetic. A small needle is used to administer the product, so if you do get nervous about needles, please request an anaesthetic cream prior to the appointment.
What Should I Do Prior To My Treatment?
Prior to any procedures taking place a medical history will need to be discussed. It is importance to understand if any medicines or dietry supplements are being taken as some can adversely affect the way the toxin works or increase risk of bruising.
If you are taking supplements such as Vitamin A, C or E, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, fish oils, St. Johns Wort or some pain killing medicines such as aspirin or ibuprofen, then these can increase your risk of bruising and it may be advisable to stop taking them a few days before your treatment. It is also advisable that you do not drink alcohol the night before your treatment, for the same reason.
It is not advised to have any treatment if you are feeling unwell.
Make up will need to be removed prior to treatment and is advised to not be reapplied for 12 hours in order to reduce risk of irritation or infection at the injection sites.
Please read the Aftercare instructions prior to any treatments so that your schedule allows for you to follow it (These will be sent out via email prior to your appointment).
What Are Derma Fillers?
Dermal Fillers are a clear sterile gel in a syringe used to enhance, define or correct
facial contours.
Common areas that can be treated with dermal fillers are:
- Nose to mouth lines (nasolabial lines)
- Corners of the mouth (marionette lines)
- Cheeks and jawlines
- Lips (to contour and add volume)
At Radiant Aesthetics we only used tried and tested brands from reputable sources.
What is Hyaluronic Acid (HA) And How Does It Work?
Dermal fillers are made with Hyaluronic Acid (HA) which is a naturally occurring substance in the body. Its job is to help keep the skin hydrated whilst adding plumpness. HA naturally breaks down in the body during metabolism. As we age our metabolism slows down and so does replacement of HA. This can leave our skin less supple and can cause it to wrinkle easily.
Hyaluronic acid attracts and binds water in the skin providing volume and hydration. As it is a naturally occurring compound within the body it is safe to use, and reactions are rare.
Do Derma Fillers Hurt?
Most leading brands of dermal filler also contain a local anaesthetic and topical anaesthetic will be applied to the skin prior to treatment. There may be a small amount of pressure at the initial injection but overall, most people do not find it to be that uncomfortable. There may be a small amount of bleeding at the injection sites due to the skin being pierced as the fillers are administered with a needle.
What Should I Do Before My Treatment?
All make up will need to be removed prior to treatment, so please attend “fresh faced” if possible.
Alcohol, aspirin, Ibuprofen and a range of dietary supplements including; St. Johns Wort, fish oils, Gingko Biloba, Vitamins C and E- may all contribute to bruising and are best avoided 24 hours before treatment. Treatment cannot be administered if there is an active skin infection, including acne or cold sores or if you are unwell- including colds, coughs, sore throats etc. Do contact the clinic to discuss any illness or new medicines prior to attending.
How Long Is The Recovery Time For Derma Fillers?
Recovery is usually between 24-72 hours after the procedure. This can vary for different individuals and depending on each treatment.
We take our aftercare very seriously and it is strongly advised that post procedure instructions are closely followed to reduce risks of complications or infection. Post procedure instructions will be discussed as part of the consultaion process.
Lips are a more delicate area and there may be swelling or bruising after treatment- this is perfectly normal. It usually subsides after 7 days.
How long will My Derma Filers last?
The average length of time is between 6 months and 18 months. This depends on a few factors: the procedure, the product but also down to the individual and lifestyle.
If you choose not to maintain the results with further treatment your skin will return to its pre-treatment state over time.
